  • The Beatles' classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, has been digitally restored for DVD and Blu-ray release. The film's songtrack album CD is also being re-issued. Currently out of print, the film has been restored in 4K digital resolution for the first time by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film's restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame. Bonus features for the Yellow Submarine DVD and Blu-ray include a short making-of documentary titled Mod Odyssey" (TRT: 7:30), the film's original theatrical trailer, audio commentary by producer John Coates and art director Heinz Edelmann, several brief interview clips with others involved with the film, storyboard sequences, 29 original pencil drawings and 30 behind-the-scenes photos. Both Digipak packages will include reproductions of animation cels from the film, collectible stickers, and a 16-page booklet with a new essay by Yellow Submarine aficionado John Lasseter (Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios). Directed by George Dunning, and written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich Segal, Yellow Submarine began its voyage to the screen when Brodax, who had previously produced nearly 40 episodes of ABC's animated Beatles TV series, approached The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein with a unique vision for a full-length animated feature. Yellow Submarine, based upon a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, is a fantastic tale brimming with peace, love, and hope, propelled by Beatles songs, including Eleanor Rigby," When I'm Sixty-Four," Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," All You Need Is Love," and It's All Too Much." When the film debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognized as a landmark achievement, revolutionizing a genre by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques. • This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just supersized with extra footage. Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions. What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late '60s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith-- Rubber Soul , Revolver , and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band . The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette, and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs. High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat. --Sam Sutherland

Nicktoons Nick Tunes Microphone and CD-ROM Game
  • Nicktoons Nick Tunes Microphone and CD-ROM Game
  • Do you have a little ham or a future karaoke diva in your house? If your halls are alive with the sound of music, then this CD-ROM and microphone set may be a useful way to channel some of that creative noise. Nicktoons Nick Tunes PC-Powered Microphone & CD-ROM Game is an aural romp that includes several favorite Nicktoons characters. It is not a means to record your child singing full-length songs or teach formal musical skills. You don't want your child learning music theory from SpongeBob Squarepants anyway, do you? The plastic microphone that comes with this CD-ROM is not a prop: it has a 15-pin game port connector and a stereo microphone jack attached. Because setup involves crawling behind the CPU and plugging things in correctly, parents should install this program. Parents may also need to help with a simple microphone calibration process the program requires. Once setup is complete, the microphone can be used to control gameplay by pointing it directly to the screen and clicking it. Now, on to the noisemaking. Players start in a recording studio, with Angelica, the queen Rugrat, at the soundboard, demanding that players "make jam." Jam can be made with SpongeBob Squarepants, Arnold, Eliza Thornberry, or Reggie Rocket. Or players can visit the Mix Master studio with Tommy Pickles. Here, players can practice recording with the microphone, distort a playback of their voice with special effects, or play with our favorite: the Unscamble-ator. This machine presents a nonsense word to read into the microphone, like "erp-ape-swoon." Then, the Unscramble-ator plays the recording backwards, revealing the word "newspaper"--or actually a funky variation of "newspaper" that sounds like back masking on a Beatles album. Games with the other characters involve singing with them, either karaoke-style, with highlighted lyrics underneath, or duet-style, where players record one-word "solos" when cued. All of the songs have character-specific lyrics set to well-known tunes: Reggie Rocket sings "Sports That Make You Scream" to the tune of "You Get a Line and I'll Get a Pole." Songs can be played back and then stored within the game on a virtual CD. Unfortunately, this program doesn't record entire songs. Wail your heart out during karaoke, and when you play it back, you'll only hear the character singing. Each character also hosts a "challenge" game. All of the challenge games involve using the microphone to point and click at action on the screen, and some demand that players shout things like "Kick it!" (the Snowboarding Challenge) and "Bust a move!" (the Rappin' Dance Challenge) into the mic when cued. An informal poll of kids revealed that they felt kind of stupid being required to shout these phrases into the mic. The best of the challenge games is Eliza Thornberry's. As Eliza sings a song about animals in hiding, they pop out from behind bushes, and when the mike is pointed at them, they warble, grunt, or harmonize along to Eliza's tune. This CD-ROM gets points for creativity, sneaking in a lot of reading, and liberal use of that Nickelodeon wit. But we were disappointed that we didn't actually get to record more than one short phrase at a time with our cool plastic mic, and no matter how clearly we tried to enunciate "snore" during the duet with SpongeBob, it always sounded like "kor" when the tune played back. (Ages 6 and older) --Anne Erickson

Legends of Music: The Life and Legacy of John Lennon
  • Legends of Music: The Life and Legacy of John Lennon
  • *Includes a Suggested Playlist of 20 of Lennon's Greatest Songs. *Includes detailed descriptions of the origins and recording of some of Lennon's timeless classics, including Tomorrow Never Knows, Strawberry Fields Forever, and A Day in the Life. *Includes pictures of Lennon and important people, places, and events in his life. *Includes a Bibliography for further reading. In 1964, girls all across the United States filled venues, almost literally screamed their heads off, and fainted en masse. Almost from the second they played the first note, The Beatles would be hit with the resounding screams, which made it impossible for them to even hear themselves sing. When they made their American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in early 1964, they were greeted by young fans who whipped themselves up into such a frenzy that some of them fainted. Beatlemania had struck North America, creating a musical and pop culture phenomenon unlike anything the world had ever seen. At the center of it all was John Lennon, the man who founded The Beatles and was instrumental in creating the soundtrack of the 1960s, while producing some of the world's most timeless classics. Together with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, Lennon became one of the world's most famous men, and he was also one of the world's most interesting and outspoken men, a complex figure who survived a turbulent upbringing, addictions to drugs, and unstable relationships, only to be tragically killed just as he was settling into a serene, comfortable life. His loss is still widely felt today like it was in December 1980, as people remain in awe of his music and continue to grapple with the contradictory nature of his life and work, which at any given moment could oscillate from his notoriously acerbic wit to the endless optimism of Imagine. The incredible highs and lows of Lennon's life, as well as his untimely death, are all a well known narrative across the universe, but what made one of the world's most revered musicians and peace activists tick? Legends of Music: The Life and Legacy of John Lennon details Lennon's life and career while analyzing his lasting legacy, but it also humanizes the rebellious hellion who struggled in school, did well with women, and ultimately became one of rock's most enduring icons. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about John Lennon like you never have before, in no time at all.

  • In the summer of 1966, Richard Franklin Speck, a twenty-two year old Ordinary Seaman, waiting for a berth aboard a merchant ship, murdered eight student nurses inside a townhouse in South Chicago, shocking the surrounding hardworking, religious community to its very core. Twenty years later, Carly Rocket and her business partner, Mike Holtzer, find themselves inside Stateville Correctional Facility hired to cast extras for a Hollywood movie. Unbeknownst to her, Speck is one of Stateville’s inmates. His infamous murders took place only blocks from her childhood home leaving her with deep emotional wounds. Discovering that Speck is enjoying his life behind bars, Carly is outraged and conspires with a guard to make a video tape of Speck’s uninhibited life in an attempt to change prison regulations. But it backfires, and suddenly Carly finds herself in danger of becoming Speck’s ninth victim. Publisher's Weekly Reviewed by Michelle Carly Rockett and her business partner and former boyfriend Mike Holtzer own a casting company for extras in movies. Their newest assignment is for a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger being filmed at the Statesville Prison who’s most famous murderer, Richard Speck, is in residence. In the summer of 1966, Carly met an intriguing German sailor, Richard Speck, who went on to slaughter eight student nurses near her home in South Chicago. At the time, Carly and her two best friends were obsessed with the Beatles and believed one of them was destined to marry one. They thought that their sailor knew the Beatles personally and would deliver their love letters. The scars left by Speck have surfaced for Carly when she sees how he lives in prison, how he has freedom, lovers and loves his life. Now her life is on course to make him pay and for the prison to be accountable to punish those who deserve it. Her obsession and use of alcohol will propel her to her own personal Hell. This was a riveting read full of history, strength and struggle. Mary Leo who personally grew up just blocks from the townhouse where the nurses were killed, writes with a sense of ease and confidence about the times and facts. A true storyteller with a great grasp on detail and use of imagination that got me inside Carly’s mind and pain. As Carly’s life unfolds I found myself emphasizing with the real life scars of Speck’s victims’ families and how life must have been for them. Review: Trusting Evil is a very different kind of suspense novel, a true original, revolving around the heinous crimes of one Richard Speck who tortured, raped and murdered 8 student nurses on July 14, 1966, in Chicago. Speck had Born to Raise Hell tattoed on his arm. All of that is true. Every word. And what is fictional in the novel rings true as well. This is a heartfelt, inspired novel written by Mary Leo, who lived in that time, very near to where it all happened. Carly Rockett was a young girl, in love with Ringo Star and living the normal life of a teenager when the crimes occurred, and changed her life forever. She is haunted by the brutal murders throughout the rest of her childhood and into adulthood. She is traumatized by what she perceives as her own part in what happened. Only whiskey can fog the horrid memories, and not even then. She is obsessed by Richard Speck. Her life is spiralling downword fast. Carly works in the movie business, and one day finds herself filming a movie inside the very prison where Richard Franklin Speck, in all his ugliness, lives quite happily. Leo portrays with a chilling vividness scenes that make you want to look away, though you cannot. The prose is fast moving, and as spare as Hemingway’s. The dialogue brilliant, the descriptions and sensory details, always just enough to pull the reader into the story and hold them fast until the last word. It’s more than that, though. It’s also a love story. I promise you, you won’t be able to put Trusting Evil down, and, like Carly, you’ll be haunted
