Puccini - Tosca / Erede, Marton, Furlan, Australian Opera
  • Puccini - Tosca / Erede, Marton, Furlan, Australian Opera
  • Eva Marton's prime asset was her large, thrillingly powerful soprano voice, the kind that should be perfect for Puccini's most vocally demanding heroine. And, based on the evidence of this dramatically satisfying 1986 production from the Australian Opera, it was. Even though Marton is past her vocal peak, she still brings force and control to her portrayal of the actress turned murderer for the sake of her beloved artist-lover, Cavaradossi. John Shaw (as the police chief Scarpia) and Lamberto Furlan (as Cavaradossi) both turn in memorable performances but are relegated to near-oblivion by Marton's sheer presence. John Copley's staging stays within the confines of the libretto descriptions, preferring to illustrate rather than illuminate. But that's a small matter; between Marton's luminosity and the virtuosic playing of the Elizabethan Sydney Orchestra under the able baton of Alberto Erede, this is a Tosca to remember. --Kevin Filipski

Babylon 5: In the Beginning [VHS]
  • Babylon 5: In the Beginning [VHS]
  • While the series pilot Babylon 5: The Gathering establishes the characters and introduces the conflicts that will become central to the series, it also draws upon a rich history that is continually alluded to but never fully explained. Babylon 5: In the Beginning , produced in the hiatus between the fourth and fifth seasons of the series, packs all that history--and more--into a prequel stuffed to the hatches with the epic doings of Earth, Minbar, Narn, and Centauri in the days before the Babylon stations were built. Told in almost fairy-tale fashion by Londo Molari to a pair of children, the movie explicates the ill-fated first meeting between representatives of Earth and Minbar, the devastating war, the sudden surrender, and the universe-altering secret of Jeffrey Sinclair. It also gives the early histories of characters who will become central to the series, in particular Londo and G'Kar. Ostensibly created to catch recent converts up with the series as it made its transition to a new network, the movie is infused with the epic sweep and storytelling confidence producer-writer Michael J. Straczynski and his cast and crew had developed by the fourth season. It's an elegant, compelling addition to the Babylon 5 universe and a dramatic highlight of the series. As an introduction, though, it gives away the mystery that pervades the shadowy history slowly revealed through the first three seasons--it's actually better seen from the vantage point of the fifth season. --Sean Axmaker

Babylon 5: The Movie Collection
  • Babylon 5: The Movie Collection
  • The Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5 , the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke. Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5 . In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5 , telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade . Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. --Gary S. Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason (Widescreen Edition)
  • Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason (Widescreen Edition)
  • It would be difficult to top the phenomenal success of BRIDGET JONES' DIARY, but the sequel certainly pulls it off. The incomparable Renée Zellweger (JERRY MACGUIRE, COLD MOUNTAIN) once again breathes hilarious life into the flawed heroine who sent her career soaring. This installment of Bridget's journal finds her dealing with the growing pains of a new relationship with Mark Darcy, her crush from the first film (stilted but passionate Colin Firth). Though wildly in love with him, Bridget, a TV producer, worries off and on that Mark and his stuffy attorney crowd may not be quite her cup of tea. When she attends an important law function as Mark's date, she manages to embarrass herself and offend his snobby colleagues. To top it off, Mark's gorgeous and willowy coworker Rebecca (Jacinda Barrett) seems to have a knack for showing up at just the wrong time. When Bridget finally asks Mark outright if he's having an affair with the leggy Rebecca, he refuses to answer. Bridget jets off in a huff, and it appears the relationship is officially on the rocks. To further complicate matters, her cute and caddish former love Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) asks her to join him on-location in Thailand for a TV shoot--another chance at romance for Bridget Jones. Zellweger makes the film completely her own, and provides some quintessential "Bridget" moments--Bridget trying to walk up a flight of stairs in heels, Bridget careening down a mountain on skis, or Bridget tripping on magic mushrooms on a Thai beach. Brilliantly rehashing this unforgettable character, the sequel is a pleasure to watch that easily matches the original.
