Louis Malle's Zazie dans le métro is a delightful splash of slapstick and silliness, set against the dense background of Paris as if the City of Light were simply the best vaudeville stage ever constructed. The young star Catherine Demongeot is a madcap Zazie, a willful, mouthy country kid who's in Paris to visit with her reluctant Uncle Gabriel (a properly befuddled Philippe Noiret). Zazie's sole goal for her visit to Paris? Riding the famed métro, naturellement . That is pretty much the plot of Zazie --yet what Malle, Demongeot, and Malle's talented crew do with that wisp of a concept is brilliant, and owes more to the best films of, say, Harold Lloyd, than to the French New Wave. The adults in Zazie are always just two steps behind the little dynamo as she zips around the city, leaving good-natured chaos in her wake. This new Criterion disc is a wonderful addition to any film-lover's collection, for Zazie dans le métro itself is restored to show the brilliance of cinematographer Henri Raichi and the splendid set design that makes the streets of Paris, just below its breathtaking landmarks, a pastiche of early '60s cubist colors. Not to be missed is the documentary interview with assistant director Philippe Collin, Le Paris de Zazie , in which Collin recalls the installation around the city of graphic, and graphically dramatic, panels in the background that tie Zazie dans the métro together with energy and pizazz. After establishing her screen career with supporting roles in The Big Chill and The Natural , Glenn Close made her starring debut in the title role of this tepid comedy--an example of the "body-switch" movie trend of the mid-1980s. No doubt Close sensed tour-de-force potential in playing a virtuous San Francisco wife and Catholic bishop's secretary whose body is possessed by the vampy spirit of a 1920s flapper. Instead, the movie drains all the energy from Close's valiant efforts, neglecting virtually any idea that might have made this film genuinely fresh and funny. What's left is an amiable, old-fashioned comedy that gets by on sporadic bursts of charm. Jan (Close) and her librarian husband Nick (Mandy Patinkin) discover Maxie's past in their roomy Victorian home; elderly neighbor Ruth Gordon (in her final film role) informs them that Maxie was on the verge of silent-movie stardom when she died in a car accident in 1927. But Maxie's spirit lives on, and her ectoplasm settles intermittently into Jan's body, sending Nick into a panic when Maxie "drops in" at unpredictable intervals. All Maxie wants is another shot at stardom, and she gets her chance in a remake of Cleopatra --with unbilled Harry Hamlin as Marc Antony! A dubious premise to begin with, it's further victimized by a nagging flatness of tone; if this were a TV sitcom the laugh track would be silent. Fortunately for Close, her psycho-success in Fatal Attraction was less than two years away. --Jeff Shannon

So the journey begins. This album is pre-experimentation vintage Pumpkins. Produced by Butch Vig (Garbage, Sonic Youth, Nirvana's Nevermind ), Siamese Dream is first about guitars. Lots and lots of guitars. A very close second is Jimmy Chamberlain's unquestionably excellent power drumming. Throughout each song, Billy Corgan delivers angsty lyrics in his signature breathy whine. "Disarm" is a nice intermission halfway though the album. As the title of the song suggests, it throws the listener into a different mood with its full string arrangements and radiant orchestral chimes. But then it is back to the aural masochism--a pain that rarely sounds so sweet. --Beth Bessmer
