	National Treasure (Widescreen Edition) Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code , it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer production's multi-genre appeal. Nobody will ever accuse director Jon Turtletaub of artistic ambition, but you've got to admit he serves up an enjoyable dose of PG-rated entertainment, full of musty clues, skeletons, deep tunnels, and harmless adventure in the old-school tradition. While the film is somewhat dark, thanks to the family's monetary hardships and the uncertainty regarding the father's status in the war, it also offers abundant humor in scenes such as the spoiled cousins' arrival at what they call the "British Museum of Poo," and in imaginative gimmicks like an elaborately complicated farm invention dubbed the "Pig Scratch-O-Matic" and a litter of acrobatic piglets who occasionally engage in the art of synchronized swimming. Add in a putty-eating bird, the ever-stern Nanny McPhee with her magical walking stick and her dubious ties to the War Department, and a very scatterbrained shopkeeper (Maggie Smith), and there always seems to be something entertaining to chuckle about. With regard to replication, mechanisms called "Time Pads" allow players to record Clank as he performs calculated physical movements and actions. These can then be saved individually and later replayed in specific combinations in the presence of the real Clank to solve puzzles requiring extreme speed or that he be in multiple places at the same time. Similar in usage to this is the Chronoscepter which can be used against swift moving objects or enemies while platforming in order to get into positions which otherwise would be impossible to reach. Used separately as well as together these two make for new wrinkles in Clank's abilities to solve complex puzzles across 3D spaces and in evasion and combat of enemies.
