Emergency
  • The Pigeon Detectives - Emergency
  • When history looks back on The Pigeon Detectives, will they be seen as anything more significant than a These Animal Men or Shed Seven to Kaiser Chiefs' Blur? Their debut album, Wait for Me , achieved remarkable success in the bizarre, never-ending post-Libertines vacuum with a string of undoubtedly infectious and direct bouts of rabble-raising indie-fuzz. But lining up alongside The Wombats, The View, The Enemy, Dirty Pretty Things, The Courteeners et al, minions chipping away at the same rock-face, there are gems—occasionally, of course there are--but there's also an inevitable mountain of sediment. And herein lies the problem for their typically difficult second album Emergency . While their approach may have matured a little, with "This Is an Emergency" bouncing on the Franz Ferdinand springboard and "Keep Oo Your Dress" having a bit of an Idlewild complexion rather than just plundering and shouting over Up the Bracket , the album has trouble lifting its head much above the parapet. "She's Gone", which has as much in common with Green Day's buffed punk-pop as contemporary UK strands, and the mid-pace Kaisers-esque "Love You for a Day (Hate You for a Week)" are perfectly affable, serviceable Britpop, but the sirens are not blaring this time. There are scattered fires, but they'll probably burn out on their own. No need to call 999. --James Berry

  • Set in Montana's Big Sky country, shot in Utah, lensed by Eric Alan Edwards (cinematographer of My Own Private Idaho )--no wonder it's hard to tell where Clay Pigeons lives, or where it's going. A Ridley Scott protégé previously at home in commercials and videos, debuting director David Dobkin aims to deliver us into the blackly comedic badlands of neo-noir, territory mined by the likes of Red Rock West and Fargo . Pigeons launches strongly, with several cruel turns of the screw. Out target-shooting, Clay Birdwell (Joaquin Phoenix) is hit with the news that his best pal knows he's been boffing his ur -slut wife (Georgina Cates) and could take Clay out on the spot, but chooses a creepier revenge--committing suicide in order to frame the guy who's cuckolded him. Naturally, Clay covers up the mess, thereby opening the film's can of very nasty worms. A slick, fast-talking cowboy (Vince Vaughn)--the funhouse-mirror-opposite of Phoenix's sweet, slow farmboy--turns up, and a string of ugly murders begins to play out. Once Vaughn's Lester Long is on the scene, spreading his psychotically giggling bonhomie, Dobkin's skin-deep riff on Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train pretty much belongs to him. The rest of the cast looks more or less like clay pigeons set up by a scattershot script: exceptions include the always-estimable Scott Wilson who transforms his caricature-prone Sheriff Mooney into a character of nuanced humanity, and Janeane Garofalo, as an urban-hip FBI agent, whose single-chick sarcasm goes down in flames when Lester unholsters those big guns of come-hither charm. John Lurie of Lounge Lizards fame contributes a distinctive score, but Elvis Presley acts as the film's patron saint in more ways than one: Clay Pigeons ' sexiest, scariest wet work is choreographed to "It's Now or Never." --Kathleen Murphy

Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4
  • Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4
  • David Suchet continues his definitive (and supremely entertaining) portrayal of Agatha Christie's Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot in Mrs. McGinty's Dead and Cat Among the Pigeons . Poirot is one of those classic characters of fiction who would be intolerable in real life, yet is delightful on the page (or in this case, the screen). Suchet, with his heavy-lidded but piercing eyes and an absurd little mustache, perfectly captures the balance of narcissism and nosiness--how Poirot uses his superciliousness to make himself seem harmless and unthreatening to the murderers and other criminals who meet and underestimate him. Accompanying the two mysteries is an engaging behind-the-scenes documentary that, among other thoughtful observations from the actors and writers of the series, points out that Poirot's foreignness allowed Christie to gently mock the peculiarities and obsessions of the English. As Poirot strives to rescue a young man unjustly sentenced to death in Mrs. McGinty's Dead , he survives an assault on his own life as well as the brusque and pushy manners of his friend, crime novelist Ariadne Oliver (Zoe Wanamaker). The character of Oliver gave Christie the opportunity to poke fun at her own career, such as when the grumpy novelist bickers with a playwright in an attempt to infuse an adaptation with more sex appeal. Mrs. McGinty's Dead is entirely enjoyable, but it suffers a bit from excessive directorial flash with the camera. Cat Among the Pigeons , on the other hand, is a perfect fusion of story and style, where subtle visual flourishes enhance the plot's forward movement and mood of anticipation. The headmistress of a girls' school asks Poirot to help her choose her successor--but when a tyrannical teacher is murdered in the sports pavilion, Poirot soon unravels a tapestry of hidden rubies, a faraway revolution, a voodoo doll, and a missing tennis racket. Flashes of wit increase the fun (The headmistress huffs, "Mr. Poirot has an international reputation"--"So does Mussolini," grumbles the local constable). Suchet's skilled performances in Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4 will please long-time fans and would be an excellent starting point for any beginner. --Bret Fetzer Stills from Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4 (Click for larger image) Beyond Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4 Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 1 Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 2 Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 3

Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]
  • Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]
  • Pushing Daisies is many things at once: detective show, romantic comedy, whimsical fantasy and above all, a story about a guy who bakes pies and has the ability to bring dead people back to life. Somehow all of these things come together to make one of the most enjoyable, funny and bittersweet shows to come along in a long time. A lot of that magic comes from the near-perfect casting - Lee Pace ( The Fall , Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day ) as Ned the Piemaker is wonderfully reserved and adorably neurotic; his facial expressions alone provide some of the most moving and hilarious moments in the series. Anna Friel as Charlotte "Chuck" Charles, Chi McBride as Emerson Cod and Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook round out the regulars at the Pie Hole and veteran actresses Swoosie Kurtz and Ellen Greene are great as Chuck's eccentric aunts whose passions include synchronized swimming, amateur ornithology and rare cheeses. Pushing Daisies exists in a world where people regularly break out into song to express their feelings, where death is never gory and usually played for comic effect, and where every color on screen is richly saturated and vibrant, creating an oddly timeless Edward Scissorhands -like world. Bryan Fuller, the creator of cult favorites Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls has perfected his style with Pushing Daisies ; this series has a broader appeal than the previous shows. Each imaginatively produced episode has such snappy writing paired with ghoulish sensibilities, heart wrenching romance and classic caper-style crime fighting, making every moment completely un-missable. The Blu-ray release of Season One contains all nine original episodes and a behind-the-scenes featurette. -- Kira Canny

Valiant
  • Valiant
  • A host of great British thespians, from Ewan MacGregor to John Cleese, lend their voices to Valiant , a computer-animated bird's-eye-view of World War II. Valiant (MacGregor, Big Fish , Down With Love ), though but a small pigeon, is determined to join the homing pigeon brigade and do his part to help win the war. He and a handful of other misfits are assembled into a motley squad and suddenly find themselves thrust into combat with the responsibility of delivering a crucial message. Unfortunately, the villainous Von Talon (Tim Curry, The Rocky Horror Picture Show ), a Nazi falcon, intends to tear them to feathers over the English Channel. Aside from some delightful voice work from Ricky Gervais ( The Office ) as a filthy but cunning pigeon, there's not much to recommend about Valiant . The story is clunky, cliche-ridden, and underdeveloped; the design is charmless and inexpressive; the characters are so generic that even a cast as talented as Jim Broadbent ( Topsy-Turvy , Iris ), Hugh Laurie ( House ), and John Hurt ( 1984 , The Elephant Man ) can do little to make them anything but bland stereotypes from a long-exhausted movie genre. Overall, poorly conceived and clumsily executed. --Bret Fetzer
