Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign. The Exorcist director William Friedkin made a return to the horror genre with this blend of straightforward suspense and Druid myth-inspired horror-fantasy. The idyllic lives of yuppie couple Phil and Kate (Dwier Brown and Carey Lowell) seem complete when they select the winsome young Camilla (Jenny Seagrove) as a live-in nanny for their newborn child, but the lovely young Camilla -- whose natural sexuality begins to work its spell on Phil -- is not what she appears to be. This becomes shockingly apparent to the audience early in the story when she is set upon by a trio of rape-minded thugs who meet with a particularly nasty fate in the woods, but it seems to take the parents much longer to come to the same conclusion. In fact, the woods are the key to the entire equation, as Camilla is revealed to be a powerful forest entity from Druid mythology who intends to sacrifice her infant charge to a hideous tree-god.

This follow-up to Mystery of the Fun Park Phantom pits Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Greatest-of-all-Danes Scooby against the Faceless Rider, a mysterious spirit (or is it?) haunting the town. Thankfully, they're all back with the same groovy clothes, lingo, and music--plus the goofy humor--that made their '70s TV show so much fun to watch. To get to the bottom of what's spooking Los Burritos, the group must explore the town and talk to everyone who crosses their path, all the while looking out for clues to help them solve the mystery at hand. To uncover the right information, players must perform semi-educational activities like setting a clock to the proper time, putting a puzzle together, and recalling details from the game itself. There are also fun challenges throughout (Scooby takes on the Faceless Rider in a pie fight to the finish, and later plays a mean game of horseshoes) to earn Scooby Snacks. These prove important when you want Shaggy and Scooby to enter an especially scary area--you'll have to bribe them with Scooby Snacks to get them to cooperate. The fun activities and puzzles, paired with all the crime solving, push kids to use problem-solving skills and deductive reasoning. Who knew Scooby could make you smarter? In addition to being just plain retro fun, the game offers some help in solving each mystery (we found several in our gameplay): click on the Mystery, Inc. van to review the clues you've collected, check your Scooby Snack count, or ask Scrappy for help. And to keep the games challenging as kids grow (or perhaps for adults to enjoy), players can select from three "spookiness" levels that increase in difficulty.
